Scholarship Recipients 2007--
Walter's Gang:
In 2007, the
Parkway Running
Club continued to award the Walter Burgess Scholarship to
nine recipients who were sent to the
Newport Running Camp
for a week. Of course, since all the kids sound so
deserving, it is hard to say no to anyone. Those few who applied late or
we weren’t able to assist were given a discount for tuition by Pete
Squires, the camp organizer/coach. As always he has been very generous in
helping us make the Newport Running Camp a reality for so many of the
applicants.

Joseph W.
– A past Scholarship recipient from Gardner High School - found the
experience at the Newport Running Camp to be so rewarding that he wanted
to go again this year. Because of Camp, Joe’s running has greatly
improved as have his health habits, making him a stronger athlete. Since
his sister is in college, it would be a financial burden for his parents
to also have to pay for his summer camp. Thus, he asked us to help him
out again this summer and we are happy to be able to do so.
Brittany R.
– A Middletown New Jersey high school student - attended the Newport
Running Camp last year and thought it one of the best weeks of her life.
Brittany loves running as a competitor and also just to be out there
enjoying the leisure side of running – the scenery and the stress release
that comes with a long peaceful run. Her parents were not able to send
her to Camp again this summer. She applied for a Scholarship with the
idea that she would be forever grateful and hopes one day to give back to
the Camp as a leader for future participants. We hope so too.
Adam O. - Quabbib Middle School Cross Country Team, Hubbardston,
MA – was praised by his coach, Robert Desilets as being a vital member of
the 2006 Team. Adam is a 7th grader and running has become a
true passion for him as it was at one time for his father. He knows that
his academics come first, and has proved himself as he is an honor
student. He seems to be much deserving of this experience!
Kathryn W.
- Gardner High School,
senior – is a member of the cross country team, has been attending the
Newport Running Camp for three years and needed our help this year so she
could go again. Kathie says, simply put running has been her life since
sixth grade. With running, she can push and challenge herself to new
levels of difficulty as well as rid herself of all the stress that builds
up in her busy lifestyle. In addition to being an avid runner, Katie is a
dedicated student and an active member in other school clubs and
activities. Although she admits to not being the best runner out there,
Katie tries her best in every race and has proved to be a valuable member
of her team. With a Walter Burgess Scholarship, she looks forward to
becoming even more adept at her favorite sport after another year at Camp.
Linsey L.
- Westminster, MA – was
touted in her local paper as a coach’s dream come true. Linsey loves
running and feels it offers many disguised miracles – cardio, mental, and
physical benefits, and even help with time management skills. She also
has met some amazing people, mentors and friends through her running. She
is active in her community on race committees and as a volunteer at the
Fitchburg Art Museum children’s camps. Linsey has participated in the
Newport Running Camp last year and looks forward to going again this
year. We are pleased to provide her with that opportunity.
Renee C.
- Cedar Crest College-Allentown, PA – first began to run competitively as
a freshman in college. This was a difficult and challenging pursuit, as
she was surrounded by seasoned runners, who’s abilities at the time far
exceeded hers. However, with the support and encouragement of her coaches
and teammates, she gained the knowledge and confidence in her own
abilities both as a runner and as a person. Renee competed in the
Runner’s World Half Marathon in April, 2005. She now wants to attend the
Newport Running Camp to gain more knowledge and skills that she hopes one
day to pass on to other young adult atheletes.
Zachary O.
- Gardner High School,- is about to enter his junior year of high school
and wants to attend the Newport Running Camp in the hopes of improving his
endurance, strength and turn over. He has attended for the past two years
and found it to be very rewarding. He is looking forward to another fun
and informative week of running thanks to the Walter Burgess Scholarship.
Stephanie E.
- Gardner Hugh School,
freshman – has just completed her first year on the high school
cross-country team. She lent great support to the team as she placed
second in the League meet, 10th in the Districts, and 41st
at States. This season and the memories connected to it are something
Stephanie will never forget. She is active in her community volunteering
at the House of Peace and Education where she helps underprivileged
children get the most out of their summer. She feels that the Newport
Running Camp will really establish her strengths and push her to a new
level. With a sister in college an others in the family with active
interests, the Walter Burgess Scholarship will help Stephanie go to Camp
without the financial burden on her parents.
Kirstin and Brenna A.
– Lincroft NJ – both applied for a scholarship. We awarded one to the
family, Kirstin was the lucky sister. She will be a Junior at Middletown
South H.S. Kirstin has loved running since she was a child; in fact, she
broke the sixth grade record for the mile at her school. An avid soccer
player, Kirstin attended Newport Running Camp last year and loved the
experience so much that she has changed her focus to running. To date,
she has mostly done track running, but is shifting her focus to cross
country this fall.
Thank
you Walter!
